Outdoors & Nature Events in Northeast British Columbia

Northeast BC is a place where the wilderness is not a weekend destination but a daily backdrop. The Peace River winds through the heart of the region, the Rocky Mountain foothills rise to the west, and boreal forest stretches north toward the Yukon border. With this landscape comes an outdoor recreation culture that shapes life in the Peace Region from the first thaw of spring to the last freeze of fall, and well into the winter months besides.

Hiking, Camping, and Exploring

The region is home to some of British Columbia’s most spectacular yet least-visited natural attractions. Kinuseo Falls in Monkman Provincial Park, near Tumbler Ridge, drops 60 metres in a thundering cascade that rivals Niagara in height. The dinosaur trackways and fossil sites around Tumbler Ridge have earned the area a UNESCO Global Geopark designation, drawing paleontology enthusiasts from around the world. Closer to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, the Peace River valley offers riverside trails, birdwatching, and fishing access points that are just minutes from town.

Fishing, Hunting, and Water Sports

Anglers in the Peace Region pursue walleye, northern pike, Arctic grayling, and bull trout in rivers and lakes across the area. Guided fishing trips on the Peace River and its tributaries are popular with visitors, while locals have their own favourite spots guarded closely. The region’s lakes, including Charlie Lake and Moberly Lake, offer boating, canoeing, and kayaking through the summer months. Hunting is deeply embedded in local culture, with moose, elk, deer, and upland bird seasons drawing participants from across the province.

Winter and Northern Skies

Winter transforms the region into a playground for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. The northern latitude rewards patient observers with displays of the aurora borealis that paint the sky in green, purple, and pink, particularly during the dark months from October through March.

  • Guided nature walks and interpretive hikes are organized by local naturalist groups
  • Fishing derbies on area lakes are popular summer and winter events
  • Canoe and kayak trips on the Peace River offer multi-day wilderness experiences
  • Snowmobile rallies and poker runs draw riders to groomed trail systems
  • Northern lights viewing is best from September through March away from city lights

In Northeast BC, the outdoors is not something you visit. It is where you live. Come prepared to be amazed by the scale and beauty of this corner of the province.
