Arts & Culture in Northeast British Columbia

The arts scene in Northeast BC is vibrant, community-driven, and deeply connected to the landscape and heritage of the Peace Region. From professional theatre productions at the North Peace Cultural Centre to grassroots painting classes at the South Peace Art Society in Dawson Creek, creative expression thrives across the region in ways that might surprise anyone who thinks of this part of the province as solely resource country.

Performance Venues and Theatre

The North Peace Cultural Centre in Fort St. John is the cultural anchor of the region, housing a professional theatre, the Fort St. John North Peace Museum, and a public art gallery under one roof. The centre hosts touring productions, local theatre company performances, film screenings, and visual art exhibitions throughout the year. In Dawson Creek, the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre (KPAC) provides a dedicated stage for concerts, plays, and dance recitals that draw audiences from across the South Peace. The historic Lido Theatre in Fort St. John, a beloved single-screen cinema, adds a nostalgic charm to the local entertainment landscape.

Visual Arts and Creative Communities

Peace Valley Arts in the South Peace and the South Peace Art Society have cultivated a strong visual arts community through workshops, exhibitions, and mentorship programs. Local galleries rotate shows featuring regional painters, photographers, sculptors, and mixed-media artists who draw inspiration from northern landscapes, wildlife, and Indigenous artistic traditions. Community art walks and studio tours offer the public a chance to meet artists and see works in progress.

Indigenous and Heritage Arts

The region’s First Nations communities, including the Blueberry River, Doig River, Halfway River, Prophet River, and West Moberly First Nations, contribute rich artistic traditions in beadwork, hide tanning, drumming, and storytelling. Cultural events and gatherings throughout the year provide opportunities to experience these living art forms firsthand.

  • Theatre productions at NPCC and KPAC run throughout the fall and winter season
  • Art workshops and classes welcome beginners and experienced artists alike
  • Gallery exhibitions rotate monthly, showcasing regional and visiting artists
  • Film screenings and documentary nights offer alternatives to mainstream cinema

Northeast BC proves that great art does not require a big city. The creative community here is welcoming, active, and always looking for new participants.
